Jack sat in his Wrangler, which was parked at the far end of Crescent Avenue, watching as a man and a woman walked out of the crumbling old building that dominated the street. They were skinny, both wearing jeans and a t-shirt, and even from this distance, Jack could see the dark circles under their eyes.

Running along the edge of the town, Crescent Avenue was not so far out to be part of the suburbs. This area had once been up-and-coming commercial real estate. But former Mayor Suthers' redevelopment plans had hit a roadblock as his conflict with Lucius escalated, and this area had been left to stagnate. That was the story most people believed. But Jack knew better. He'd never known the specifics. He hadn't wanted to, but part of Lenny's deal with the Oligarchs was leaving this area to them. And so, Suthers had made sure the redevelopments had been directed elsewhere.

The building looked like an old, gone-to-seed bar. The windows were boarded up, and junkies kept going in and out of it.

Jack’s head jerked to the right as someone knocked on the window of the passenger’s side. Kate had arrived and he let her in and shared what he had learned at the pawnshop. She looked distracted, but Jack didn't pry. She'd not asked questions about what he'd been up each time he needed to go off on his own, and he certainly wasn't going to push her until she let him in on whatever was going on.

“Keep your eyes open and ears to the ground,” Jack said. “The Oligarchs had been in control of this area for years, and we don't know how they'll react to us. They might now honor the agreement now that Suthers is gone.”

Kate grunted in the clear indication she hadn't yet come to terms with the secret deal Lenny Suthers had made. "So, what's the plan?"

"You go around the back, and I'll go in the front. If we’re lucky, no guns will go off."

Kate nodded and slipped out of the car and into one of the side alleys. Jack checked his weapon and made his way toward the front entrance. The door had been heavily reinforced. Not even a battering ram would make much of a dent.

He hammered at the door. After a moment, it opened a crack to reveal a shaven-headed youngster, sizing him up.

"I think you've got the wrong place, gramps," he said.

"I don't think so. I'm here to see Keith," Jack said.

"Don't know anyone by that name here."

Jack pushed his jacket away around the belt, just enough to reveal his badge.

The kid yelled behind him, “Yo, it’s the police!”

Another man came to the door. This one was older, maybe mid-thirties, with a tattooed scalp. He looked familiar, but Jack had booked far too many of these thugs to remember them all.

“This isn't official business,” Jack said. “I'm here to have a friendly chat with Keith.”

The older man stared at Jack for a moment, then stepped aside.

The interior still had the layout of the bar it had once been.
